London’s health is London’s wealth

Shropshire House is a physical embodiment of continuity of care – for heritage, for London, and for the health and wellbeing of our city’s people.

In May 1984, Christos Lazari acquired his first ever West End property. That property was Shropshire House, and it’s been owned by Lazari ever since, with over 40 years of continued reinvestment and a refusal to let a good building go to waste. Most commercial property of this age has been stripped, flipped or demolished. This one has been cared for, thoughtfully upgraded and kept alive in useful service. That kind of stewardship is rare. But it happens to be exactly what serious healthcare needs.

The 1931 Art Deco building, with its carefully retained heritage facade, is now home to HCA Healthcare UK – one of the largest private healthcare providers in the country, as one of three UK head office locations. It houses HCA UK Laboratories, with Pathology supporting a network of London hospitals.

Having HCA Healthcare in London benefits the city in meaningful ways. It keeps high-level medical jobs in London. It keeps innovation, research and clinical expertise in the city – and with it, London’s ability to compete as a centre for world-class medical excellence. That matters for the consultants and researchers at the top of their field. It also matters for the young people who want to build a career in medicine, and for the patients who depend on the standards that kind of concentration of talent makes possible.

Lazari has cared for this building for four decades. HCA now uses it to care for people across London. The building has never ceased to be deeply useful and valuable to the people of this city, and it has never stopped being looked after. That reciprocity and continuity is something we believe worthy of protecting.
